regards protection, by the issue of the
newessary instructions to Consular officers,
As regards jurisdiction the most. convenient oburse
will be to amend the definition of "British
Subject" in article 3 of the China Order-in-
Council so as to exolade from it persons who
possess Chinese nationality under Chinese law,
other than persons who have been less than six

months in China.

With regard to the further point raised by
you in regard to the children, wherever born,
of Anglo-Chinese who have obtained certificates
of denationalisation, I agree that it is essent-
ial that they should not be entitled to claim
British protection and jurisdiction except as
transient visitors. There would appear to be
no difficulty in treating them in the saŋgway
as other persons of dual nationality, provided
that they possess Chinese nationality under
Chinese law, The difficulty is that as
Chinese law is based exclusively on the jus
sanguinis
it would seem probable that the
children of a denationalised Chinese, at any
rate
